How to choose a personal injury attorney to represent you
First, I must disclose that my name is Mike Burman and I am a death and injury lawyer practicing in Kentucky and Tennessee. Secondly, this article is about what I think is important when hiring a lawyer for a personal injury or wrongful death case in Tennessee and Kentucky. Other lawyers may see it differently, but this is my take on how you should go about your decision.
Any one who watches television has seen the commercials for “TV” lawyers. I am not a lawyer who advertises on TV. I never will be. TV commercials are expensive. What another lawyer does with his/her money is not my business, but – and this is my view – if a lawyer wants to spend money, then hire more staff to work a case, hire good experts to study a case, and install reliable technology to manage a case, and do this day in and day out.
When choosing a death and injury lawyer in Kentucky or Tennessee, the lawyer's area of expertise and prior experience are important. What percentage of cases does the lawyer handle in the area of law important to you? Does the lawyer have a solid reputation backed up by Google reviews that show the lawyer gets the job done? Does the lawyer personally handle the case, or just take the case in, then give the case to another lawyer or staff person unfamiliar to you?
There are many ways to find a reliable lawyer. One of the best is a recommendation from a trusted friend, a relative, or a business associate. Look at the lawyer's website. Does it relate to you and answer questions you have, or is it hard to understand and leave you confused? Is this lawyer someone you can talk to, who you can trust to solve problems? Call more than one lawyer and talk to the lawyer. Visit the lawyer. Most personal injury lawyers do not charge you for the first consult. Determine which lawyer you think is best for you. Don't be afraid to ask tough questions to see how the lawyer thinks and responds.
