Keeping Your Job After an Injury

Keeping Your Job After an Injury

“Maintaining employment after an injury is a key concern.  In many cases, your employer is under no obligation to hold your job position open for an extended period of time.  This article provides helpful tips to help you keep your job.  Call me if you have questions.”  Mike Burman

STEP ONE: TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR TO SET YOUR WORK RESTRICTIONS

Tell your doctor what you do, how much weight you must lift, and the things you do that cause discomfort.  Your doctor will determine the temporary job restrictions for you to follow during your recovery.

STEP TWO: HAND YOUR WORK RESTRICTIONS TO YOUR EMPLOYER

If the work restrictions set by your doctor are not feasible to your employer, then ask your employer:

  • To reasonably accommodate your work restrictions by allowing you to work a light duty job within your work restrictions.
  • To allow you to take leave under a short term disability program offered by your employer.
  • To allow you to take leave under the Family Medical Leave Act if you are covered by this Act.
  • Contact me to discuss a plan of action if your employer is not cooperating.
